Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent enzymatic steps. The first step combines glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase. The second step adds glycine, producing the complete tripeptide, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase. Glutathione itself can inhibit the first enzyme, providing negative feedback when levels are high. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences how quickly the pathway proceeds. These reactions occur in the cytosol, and the resulting glutathione can be distributed to other compartments.
Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.

The number of sponsored research centers grew to 14 during PSI-2. Four centers were selected as Large Scale centers, with a mandate to place 15% effort on targets nominated by the broader research community, 15% on targets of biomedical relevance, and 70% on broad structural coverage; these centers were the Joint Center for Structural Genomics (JCSG), the Midwest Center for Structural Genomics (MCSG), the Northeast Structural Genomics Consortium (NESG), and the New York SGX Research Center for Structural Genomics (NYSGXRC). The new centers participating in PSI-2 included four specialized centers: Accelerated Technologies Center for Gene to 3D Structure (ATCG3D), the Center for Eukaryotic Structural Genomics (CESG), the Center for High-Throughput Structural Biology (CHTSB), a branch of the Structural Genomics of Pathogenic Protozoa Consortium taking that institution's place), the Center for Structures of Membrane Proteins (CSMP), and the New York Consortium on Membrane Protein Structure (NYCOMPS). Two homology modeling centers, the Joint Center for Molecular Modeling (JCMM) and New Methods for High-Resolution Comparative Modeling (NMHRCM) were also added, as well as two resource centers, the PSI Materials Repository (PSI-MR) and the PSI Structural Biology Knowledgebase (SBKB). The TB Structural Genomics Consortium was removed from the roster of supported research centers in the transition from PSI-1 to PSI-2.
== Isotherms == The adsorption of gases and solutes is usually described through isotherms, that is, the amount of adsorbate on the adsorbent as a function of its pressure (if gas) or concentration (for liquid phase solutes) at constant temperature. The quantity adsorbed is nearly always normalized by the mass of the adsorbent to allow comparison of different materials. A number of different isotherm models have been developed.
In February 2024, Senator Scott Wiener introduced the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act to the California legislature. The bill drew heavily on the Biden executive order and had the goal of reducing catastrophic risks by mandating safety tests for the most powerful AI models. If passed, the bill would have established a publicly-funded cloud computing cluster in California. Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the bill in September 2024. The Artificial Intelligence Training Data Transparency Act (AB 2013) and Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act (TFAIA) (SB 53) went into effect on January 1, 2026. In addition, the California AI Transparency Act will go into effect in August 2026. By signing TFAIA into law in September 2025, California became the first state to enact a statute specifically addressing the development of frontier AI models. The TFAIA protects whistleblowers who have reasonable cause to believe their employers are endangering lives or causing damages worth $1 billion. It also requires companies to publish their safety test results. The political action committee Parents & Kids Safe AI Coalition, funded by OpenAI, has been involved in efforts to establish legislation related to child safety and AI in California. In September 2024, Alameda County's Board of Supervisors approved a countywide policy for agency and department usage of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technology.

=== Precursors to chemicals === By the process of cracking, alkanes can be converted to alkenes. Simple alkenes are precursors to polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene. When the cracking is taken to extremes, alkanes can be converted to carbon black, which is a significant tire component. Chlorination of methane gives chloromethanes, which are used as solvents and building blocks for complex compounds. Similarly treatment of methane with sulfur gives carbon disulfide. Still other chemicals are prepared by reaction with sulfur trioxide and nitric oxide.
The terms Second Cold War, Cold War II, and New Cold War have been used by scholars and journalists to describe heightened geopolitical tensions in the 21st century post–Cold War era, usually between the United States and NATO on one side and Russia or China (or both) on the other. Some commentators have used the terms as a comparison to the original Cold War, while others have discouraged their use to refer to any ongoing tensions. In the 20th century, the terms were previously referred to one of later phases of the original Cold War. In the early post-Cold War era, the terms were used sparingly and variously for past predictions. Over the years, the terms have been increasingly used to describe the United States's and NATO's heightened tensions with Russia, which is regarded as the successor state to the Soviet Union, which led the Eastern Bloc during the original Cold War. However, such use to describe the tensions between NATO and Russia or between the US and Russia, especially in relations to the Russo-Ukrainian war, has been criticised. When the terms have been used to describe the US's heightened tensions with China, which has been a communist state since the Chinese Civil War concluded in 1949 with the Communist victory, the context has been often used to criticise foreign policies of the US president Donald Trump. The terms have been sometimes used to describe tensions in multilateral relations, including China–Russia relations, or in the context of international conflicts.
Dog food is specifically formulated food intended for consumption by dogs and other related canines. Dogs are considered to be omnivores with a carnivorous bias. They have the sharp, pointed teeth and shorter gastrointestinal tracts of carnivores, better suited for the consumption of meat than of vegetable substances, yet also have ten genes that are responsible for starch and glucose digestion, as well as the ability to produce amylase, an enzyme that functions to break down carbohydrates into simple sugars – something that obligate carnivores like cats lack. Dogs evolved the ability living alongside humans in agricultural societies, as they managed on scrap leftovers and excrement from humans. Dogs have managed to adapt over thousands of years to survive on the meat and non-meat scraps and leftovers of human existence and thrive on a variety of foods, with studies suggesting dogs' ability to digest carbohydrates easily may be a key difference between dogs and wolves. The dog food recommendation should be based on nutrient suitability instead of dog's preferences. Pet owners should consider their dog's breed, size, age, and health condition and choose food that is appropriate for their dog's nutritional needs. In the United States alone, the dog food market was expected to reach $23.3 billion by 2022.
=== German "Heimatdienst" === Both sides started a propaganda campaign. In March 1919 Paul Hensel, the Lutheran Superintendent of Johannisburg, had travelled to Versailles to hand over a collection of 144,447 signatures to the Allies to protest the planned cession. Pro-German campaigners collected several regional associations under the Ostdeutscher Heimatdienst (East German Homeland Service), which collected over 220,000 members. The Heimatdienst in the region was led by Max Worgitzki, an author and publisher of the Ostdeutsche Nachrichten. The Heimatdienst exerted strong psychological pressure on Masurians to vote for Germany and threatened Polish forces with physical violence. They appealed to Prussian history and loyalty to the Prussian state, disqualified Polish culture and warned of the Catholic religion and Poland's alleged economical backwardness. The pro-Germans presented the probability that all men would be drafted into the Polish military to fight Soviet Russia if they voted for the annexation by Poland. A Soviet invasion was then being attempted in the alleged eastern parts of Poland. Those were no new standpoints but had been the prevailing beliefs in Mazurian public mind for decades. The nationalist feelings were recently strengthened even more by the massive rebuilding programme of the devastated towns, which had been destroyed during the Russian invasion in the autumn of 1914 and were being financially adopted by large German cities.

In 1952, L. V. Radushkevich and V. M. Lukyanovich published clear images of 50-nanometre diameter tubes made of carbon in the Journal of Physical Chemistry of Russia. This discovery was largely unnoticed, as the article was published in Russian, and Western scientists' access to Soviet press was limited during the Cold War. Monthioux and Kuznetsov mentioned in their Carbon editorial: The fact is, Radushkevich and Lukyanovich [...] should be credited for the discovery that carbon filaments could be hollow and have a nanometre-size diameter, that is to say for the discovery of carbon nanotubes. In 1976, Morinobu Endo of CNRS observed hollow tubes of rolled up graphite sheets synthesised by a chemical vapour-growth technique. The first specimens observed would later come to be known as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Endo, in his early review of vapor-phase-grown carbon fibers (VPCF), also reminded us that he had observed a hollow tube, linearly extended with parallel carbon layer faces near the fiber core. This appears to be the observation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes at the center of the fiber. Mass-produced MWCNTs are strongly related to the VPGCF developed by Endo. In fact, they call it the "Endo process", out of respect for his early work and patents. In 1979, John Abrahamson presented evidence of carbon nanotubes at the 14th Biennial Conference of Carbon at Pennsylvania State University. The conference paper described carbon nanotubes as carbon fibers that were produced on carbon anodes during arc discharge.
=== 23 July === The Russian military claimed to have taken the village of Ivano-Daryivka, 30 kilometers northeast of Bakhmut, although the village had been under Russian occupation since 17 July. In Russia, the governor of Krasnodar Krai claimed that a Ukrainian drone attack on a ferry in Port Kavkaz killed one, wounded one and started a fire on board the vessel. The Russian defence ministry claimed that 21 drones had been shot down over the Black Sea and in Crimea. The Ukrainian military claimed to have shot down a Russian Su-25 fighter jet over Donetsk Oblast. A Ukrainian HIMARS strike hit a Russian 1K148 Yastreb-AV counter-battery radar in Zuhres, Donetsk Oblast. The SBU arrested a former host and journalist on suspicion of inciting armed resistance against mobilisation into the Ukrainian military on social media. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stripped Hungary of its right to host a meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers scheduled on 28–30 August due to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's meeting with Putin and his accusations against the EU having a "pro-war policy". Ukraine's Tavria operational-strategic group claimed that there were 90,000 Russian troops in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and that 2,000 of them had joined in recent weeks.
=== Origin === Detrital zircons are part of the sediment derived from weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks. Since zircons are heavy and highly resistant at Earth's surface, many zircons are transported, deposited and preserved as detrital zircon grains in sedimentary rocks.

Glutathione is built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage involves the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides. This structure protects the bond from some common peptidases.
It is present in nearly all cells, with notable amounts in the liver, kidneys, and red blood cells. The highest intracellular concentrations are usually in the millimolar range. Levels differ by tissue, age, and physiological state.
It is not classified as an essential nutrient because cells can synthesize it from amino acids. Dietary sources exist, but their contribution to tissue pools is not fully established. The body's production depends on enzyme activity and precursor availability.
Glutathione oxidizes quickly when cells are disrupted or when samples sit at room temperature. Rapid processing or immediate freezing minimizes the conversion of GSH to GSSG. This step helps ensure that the measured ratio reflects the original biological state.
